Seattle may be one of the most underrated cities in the United States, but there are plenty of reasons why you should make the journey to Washington State. In fact, Seattle is home to some of the country’s most beautiful scenery, friendly people, and delicious food – which makes it worth visiting at least once in your lifetime! Here are 10 reasons why you should visit Seattle.
1) The Space Needle
This beautiful building is one of Seattle’s most popular tourist attractions. Its observatory, located 520 feet in the air, offers breathtaking views of both Downtown and Elliott Bay. A visit here also includes an interesting museum, where you can learn about how it was built and its place in Seattle’s history. Try to go at night for an incredible view of Downtown lights; you’ll also get a stunning view of Puget Sound, which is about 8 miles away from The Space Needle. Depending on where you are staying, getting here might not be that simple—The Space Needle is about 2 miles north of Downtown (just east of the Elliott Bay waterfront)—but there are plenty of ways to get here. 2) Pike Place Market
This famous market is located on a pier in downtown Seattle and offers fresh produce, seafood, flowers, and food. It’s a great place to walk around and enjoy some of your favorite things. You can grab a cup of coffee from any one of many small stands; take in a show at The Pike Place Market Theater or go on an urban safari by riding a Segway through the market. Here you will find thousands of tourists enjoying their day alongside locals buying fresh fruit for dinner that night. If you are looking for souvenirs or gifts, you can head to Pike Place Chowder where they sell everything from coffee mugs with logos printed on them to real fish that have been mounted onto wood plaques.
3) Gas Works Park
If you’re looking for an easily accessible spot in Seattle, be sure to check out Gas Works Park. Located near Lake Union, Gas Works Park is a former gasification plant with panoramic views of downtown Seattle and its many famous skyscrapers. On any given day, you can see joggers running around its perimeter or locals enjoying a sunny day on one of its numerous benches. While it may not be as picturesque as Alki or West Seattle, it’s still worth checking out at least once if you’re visiting The Emerald City.
4) Experience Music Project
The Experience Music Project (EMP) is a museum located in Seattle, Washington that celebrates rock 'n' roll culture. The museum was founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and designed by Frank Gehry. With over 100,000 square feet of exhibit space, EMP is much larger than most museums built on similar topics and often houses temporary exhibits focusing on music history. With a wide variety of interactive displays, it's no wonder millions of people have visited since it opened its doors in 2000. It's also free for kids under 7 and free every Friday night from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM!
5) Chihuly Garden and Glass
Chihuly Garden and Glass is a sculpture and glass museum that houses works by Chihuly, as well as other well-known glass artists. It’s a gorgeous place to visit any time of year and has a nice cafe/restaurant that makes it a great stop for lunch or dinner. It’s one of my favorite museums in Seattle! (Bonus: If you’re traveling with kids, there are plenty of hands-on elements for them to play with.)
6) Fremont Troll
This statue is worth a photo op. The Fremont Troll — a.k.a Troll, as locals call it — is one of Fremont’s most famous sights: an enormous concrete troll hunched under a bridge near Gas Works Park, where it feeds on traffic from northbound Interstate 5. The local lore is that the troll was created by an artist who constructed it over 25 years and then filled it with concrete to hide it from potential vandals or thieves, who were known for stealing art pieces in early Seattle history.
7) Pacific Science Center
The Pacific Science Center is home to interactive exhibits, shows and workshops for all ages that encourage an understanding of science and technology. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Seattle with kids, a trip here will be a hit. You can also head outside on weekends and evenings for stargazing or take a peek at their Butterfly Show. Try one of their shows like Dinosaur Train Live! or Magic House if you want something more traditional, too. Located in Queen Anne, it’s easy to get anywhere from there by bus.
8) Ride the Ducks
An amphibious tour on land and water is sure to provide you with some of your best memories. As we mentioned, part of what makes visiting Seattle so fun is getting out and doing it—and taking a ride on a Duck is one of our favorite ways to get around! It’s not just about seeing a lot in a little time; it’s also about seeing how much fun you can have in just a few hours. And don’t worry—the Ducks take good care of their guests with an attentive and knowledgeable staff who will happily share their stories, as well as great photo opportunities for photos and selfies that are too good for social media! You won’t regret spending a couple hours on one (or both!) wheels.
9) Hike through Discovery Park
This park is filled with beautiful views of Puget Sound, islands and much more. Park in one of its six lots and then start exploring. For a great day hike, try winding through some of its trails that loop for up to 3 miles. It’s also filled with picnic areas, so bring a meal or snack if you’re going on a long adventure. Discovery Park is located at 5900 N. Marine View Drive, Seattle 98112 and is open every day from 6:30 am - 10 pm; $7 per vehicle and $3 for walkers/bikers/skaters. 10) Eat at a Food Truck
Food trucks are a part of life in downtown Seattle. Instead of passing them by for your usual fast food meal, try something new and exciting. You’ll find an endless number of gourmet options like bacon-wrapped hot dogs, vegetarian tacos and barbecue. Though these meals may be more expensive than what you’re used to paying, you’ll also find they are incredibly fresh and delicious. If a local food truck is out of your price range, try ordering off their menu at your next restaurant visit; you might get surprised at how much variety there is! And if you have time, think about hosting your own block party or potluck dinner with your neighbors—it will save everyone money while creating long-lasting friendships along the way.
